About Great Yarmouth
Pottery
Established in 1978 by Ernie Childs Great Yarmouth Potteries
has developed from its original small beginnings to encompass
asssociate crafts, Skulpture, art origination, Mold making,
Relief carving for ceramics and Bronzes, Oil painting and lithographic
printers for pottery. We manufacture many different lines in
pottery but our main product is limited edition Tankards. Our
tankards hand carved in relief have over 30 years become collectors
items. In our time in bussiness we have created 250 separate
editions each of a different subject and limited to anything
between 100-500 each edition. These antiques of tomorrow are
already in demand and some rarer ones fetch hundreds of pounds
far above their original price, lifeboat stations, historic
manor houses, churches, military organisasions have all benifited
from the sale of our tankards. |

About Ernie
Born and brought up in the mediaeval Rows of Great Yarmouth,
Ernie Childs could be said to have the 'salt' in his bones.
Nothing unusual in that hereabouts, Ernie has spent his life
within a stones-throw of the beach and river, closely connected
with all things maritime.
Just a lad during the once-great era of the herring fishing
industry, when the town was filled with hard-working, hard-playing
men and women from as far afield as Orkney and Shetland, who
had followed the herring season in an effort to make a living.
Nevertheless, this period in the history of the town has made
an indelible impression on him.
Ernie's work, whether a sculpture, a pen-and-ink drawing,
an oil painting or a hand carved tankard is deeply influenced
by the characters and characteristics that the sea-going way
of life breeds. The weather-beaten faces and hands, the tough
bodies - honed by hard graft, the courageous spirit, - hearts
as big as dustbin lids, are the inspiration for his life's
work. From lifeboat sheds and council chambers to the mantel
shelves and display cabinets of ordinary folk like him, fine
examples of the work of Ernie Childs are here for posterity.

How our tankards
progress
Our customer give us an idea what is required from this our
artists make the masters in relief carving ,each one always
unique, from this the working molds are made to create the pottery
tankard, sometimes an unusual picture is required, our artists
then create an oil painting of the desired subject, this is
then turned into the lithographs to be burned into the pottery.
We go to great extremes to make sure our tankards are first
class, everthing is made by ourselves on site.
This web site shows our latest made editions and some unusual
ones to be purchased. |
